March 31st is Cesar Chavez’s birthday, but folks in San Jose celebrated it on a Sunday, a couple of days earlier to get the whole family attend, dance, sing and participate in honor of Chavez’s life and work.

Cesar Chavez was a labor leader who fought to provide better wage and working conditions among farm workers.

He co-founded the first successful union group for farmers, United Farm Workers of America.

In 1965, Chavez joined Filipino American farmers in Delano to protest for higher wage.

He also led a historic march, and a five year strike to protest against bad working conditions and toxic pesticides the grape pickers in Delano are exposed to. In the 70s and 80s, Chavez continued his advocacy and activism.

He died in his sleep in 1993.

His birthday celebration was held in San Jose at the office of the union group, SEIU.
